Agustin Garza

Recently I went to GAUGE's speaker series featuring Agustin Garza. This event was worth while and was very inspiring. Agustin Garza (president of AIGA Los Angeles chapter) gave a very interesting talk about how he gets his inspiration and how he comes up with these ideas. He actually travels to the place and stays there for weeks on end just to understand what the place is about. Because of this he has made many brochures and logos. He is one of the few designers who considers himself a mythologist because his ideas come from myths and he has designed everything. His current project Xanadu consists of almost every aspect of what he does. Brand experience and identity, communications strategy and positioning, naming, advertising, print and web communication. If you want to know more about Garza go to his website at: http://www.garzagroup.com/

I was very pleased with seeing him and being able to meet him in person. He was a worthwhile speaker and a great designer. If you or anyone you know ever get a chance to sit in one of his lectures stay and listen.

FIne Arts Undergraduate Opening

For this opening I submitted three of my pieces. I was a bit shocked about the opening because all of my stuff is on display right now. I was expecting only one of my pieces to be up. Anyhow the opening was great. I saw a bunch of great work specifically one piece that was related to muscles. It was the front left side of the body showing the pectoralis, biceps, front deltoid etc... It was probably the best piece for me in the show. One other piece in that show that caught my attention was the plaster modeled piece of a persons face, hands, and legs. The piece was white and it was coming out of the wall which was also white. So it seemed like the piece was trying to come outside of the wall. I would strongly recommend people to go to the show because it gives you insight on what people are doing right now and it also gives you inspiration to do more with your design or with whatever kind of art you're in.

AIGA PORTFOLIO DAY?!?

AIGA Portfolio Day 2008

I know this post is a little late. But I'm posting it anyway. AIGA Portfolio Day wasn't what I had expected. I kind of felt like I was expecting a little more than just walking around and trying to find someone to meet with. I guess this was partly because I didn't really get to see the people I wanted to see. A lot of what happens at Portfolio Day is just walking around, waiting for the Professional Graphic Designer your suppose to meet with and talking with them. If there are any people that are considering to go to portfolio day next year, GET THERE REALLY EARLY. Because if you get there by the time it starts you won't get a chance to meet with the Designer you want to meet.

Here is a small bit of advice for people who haven't been to it yet.

Get there really early, have your business cards at hand when your going to meet with the designer, make sure to have a justification for everything you did something on your design, bring in only things that pertain to graphic design or an image that you are going to integrate with graphic design, and bring just a small 8.5 x 11 portfolio book instead of a huge book.

Hopefully when I'm more prepared, have a better book and have more experience I will consider going to Portfolio Day next year.

Brand Identity

For this blog there was a survey for creating a Brand Identity for yourself. Here are some of the results I came up with.

First
What three values or principles are most important to you? What matters to you?

Answer.....

I value cleanliness, being bold, and getting straight to the point. What matters to me is how clean and strong my design can be.

Next
What three adjectives would your friends use to describe you?
What are the three most common things your family would say about you?
List the three most common things that people might say, in describing having just met you for the first time.

Answer......

I would probably be calm, relaxed, and spontaneous. My family would say observant, anxious, and organized. As for people who have never met me, I would be conservative, quiet, and shy.

Then
How would you describe your personality? Pick at least three distinctly different adjectives.

Answer.......
My personality would be thorough, quiet, and shy.

Overall I think the designs that I have done resemble a thorough, quiet person, who is a little shy when it comes to public opinion.
